A truck driver's late-night haul along a lonely East Texas highway turned into something straight out of a cryptid documentary, and the details are absolutely wild.
Back in August 2001, around 3:13 AM Central time, a driver behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer spotted something strange in the middle of US Highway 287 in Anderson County, about 31 miles west of Palestine. At first, he thought it was a bear cub or a very large dog sitting in his lane. But here's the thing — East Texas doesn't have bears. Whatever was sitting in the road was about to turn a routine drive into a story he'd never forget.
He slowed to 15 mph, hit his high beams, and stopped about 20 yards out, flipping on his four-way flashers and interior spotlight to get a better look. That's when a massive bipedal figure stepped out from the soft shoulder of the road and walked right in front of his rig. The witness described it as a huge male Sasquatch, and the creature actually shielded his eyes from the glare of the headlights — not out of shyness, but to protect them from the bright light.
But the male wasn't alone. There was a toddler-sized Sasquatch with him, and the little one was giving the adult a serious run for his money, squirming and scrambling away just like a kid refusing to go somewhere with a parent. The witness watched the male try to grab the young one's arm, only to have the little Sasquatch scoot further up the road.
Then things got really interesting. As the witness sat there processing what he was seeing, a female Sasquatch appeared right next to his driver's side window — so close he could smell her breath and feel the volume of air she exhaled with each breath. She stood about 7'4" tall, with nursing breasts and dark brown fur that had traces of gray and white on her shoulders, back, and chest. Her eyes were bright, moist, and a very dark brown — not the dead, black eyes you sometimes hear about in reports.
The witness did something most people probably wouldn't have the nerve to do — he smiled at her with all his teeth and asked if the baby was okay. She slowly smiled back, and he noticed something fascinating about her teeth: either she had a double row, or the crowns of her front teeth were split down the center to give that impression.
Then she reached right into the cab of his tractor-trailer and stroked his beard. Her hands were two to three times larger than his and felt like rough leather work gloves. She sandwiched his hand between both of hers and gave him what he described as a "soulful look" with watery eyes — as if she was thanking him for not running over her baby.
The male, meanwhile, had scooped up the toddler under his left arm like a sack of potatoes and backed into the tree line without ever looking directly at the witness. At least three more Sasquatches were spotted lingering at the edge of the woods, ranging in height from the female down to slightly shorter, though none came close to the size of the dominant male.
What makes this report stand out isn't just the close contact — it's the witness himself. He had 21 years of investigation experience, asked that his name be kept out of it, and made it clear he had zero interest in paranormal topics, UFOs, aliens, or time travel before that night. He had no belief in Sasquatch until he saw one with his own eyes, and he had no fear of the creatures he encountered. His take? Using deadly force against them would have been "borderline homicide."
Anderson County sits in the heart of East Texas's Piney Woods, a region with dense forest cover, plenty of creeks, and backroads that could easily hide a family group of Sasquatches. Highway 287 cuts through some pretty remote stretches between Palestine and the rest of East Texas
