So there's this wild encounter story floating around YouTube right now that every Sasquatch researcher needs to hear about. A guy named James over on the Just James Tea channel decided to sit down and share the long version of a sighting that has stuck with him for nearly four decades.
Back in 1984, on Good Friday, James was just 17 years old. He and a buddy had taken off for the weekend after some personal stuff went sideways at home. What started as a road trip through the Blue Ridge near Front Royal, Virginia, turned into something straight out of a horror movie once the fog rolled in. No GPS, no cell phones, just a paper map and a winding timber road somewhere in the mountains of West Virginia. The kind of remote, hard-packed back road that barely qualifies as a state road.
Around 2 a.m., James spotted movement up ahead. At first he figured it was a deer. Then he realized it was a person, or at least something shaped like one. Tall, well over six feet but not quite seven. Covered in hair. And here's where it gets really interesting, because James makes a point that a lot of folks in the Sasquatch community have been saying for years. What he saw was NOT ape-like. Not gorilla-like. Not the classic Bigfoot silhouette people usually describe. He keeps coming back to this, almost frustrated by it. It looked like a giant, wild, hairy man. Period.
He even compared the face to the Neanderthal characters from the 1981 film Quest for Fire, you know, the Ron Perlman movie with the bushy eyebrows and rugged features. Dark, ruddy skin visible through the hair. Not a costume. Not a hoax. Something real standing in the middle of a mountain road in the middle of the night.
Then the figure started walking toward the car. James slowed down, thinking maybe this was just some poor soul whose vehicle broke down. That's when his friend woke up, took one look, and screamed bloody murder. James panicked, hit the gas, and the figure actually reached out toward the door as they passed. And here's the part that gives me chills. It chased them. For a quarter mile. Down a winding timber road in the dark. James kept watching in the rearview mirror as this thing sprinted after the car.
Now, James is upfront about being a skeptic. He doesn't even call what he saw a Bigfoot. He thinks most of the photos and videos online are garbage, gorilla suits and hoaxers. But he also knows what he saw wasn't human. He floats the idea of a feral mountain person, some kind of wild hominid that doesn't fit the popular narrative. And honestly, that kind of honesty makes the story hit harder. This isn't someone trying to prove anything. This is someone who saw something that broke their understanding of the world and has been carrying it for forty years.
He also mentions that when he and his friend tried to tell people, nobody believed them. They figured the whole runaway weekend adventure made the guys unreliable. Sound familiar? It happens to witnesses all the time.
West Virginia keeps popping up in these conversations, and James even jokes about it becoming some kind of Sasquatch hotbed. After hearing this story, it's not hard to see why. The Appalachian Mountains have always had a reputation for strange encounters, and this one fits right into that long, weird tradition.
Definitely worth checking out the full video over on the Just James Tea channel. James mentions he's got a couple more stories from his woods adventures, so hopefully those drop soon too. This is the kind of firsthand account that reminds you why people keep searching. Something is out there, and sometimes it finds you first.
