One of the most compelling segments follows Jason Miller, a former army medic and experienced outdoorsman who's spent 14 years living in Colwill, Washington. In 2013, Miller took his family on what started as a perfectly normal hike on a 33-degree day. That all changed when his son stopped and pointed up into the trees. What they heard wasn't a deer or an elk. Miller described it as sounding like a person with extremely heavy footsteps. His daughter Haley got an even closer look, describing a figure roughly two meters tall, hunched over, with broad muscular shoulders, long brown hair, and a face that seemed almost human. The next day, Miller returned to the site and found a fresh pile of scat, which he carefully collected using gloves and a plastic bag. That sample ended up in the hands of one of the most respected researchers in the field.
That researcher is Dr. Jeff Meldrum, a professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University who's been studying this subject for nearly two decades. Meldrum has built much of his work around footprint analysis, and the video does a great job showing why. Meldrum mentions that independent samples collected from Texas, North Carolina, Washington State, and Canada all share these same characteristics, none of which match any known species in the database. Those samples were sent to a lab specializing in DNA extraction from hair, where Professor Todd Disotell, an expert in evolutionary primatology, could analyze whether the genetic structure matches any known primate or points to something entirely new.
The documentary also brings up Gigantopithecus, the massive prehistoric ape that once roamed parts of Asia. Standing up to 10 feet tall and weighing anywhere from 440 to 660 pounds, Gigantopithecus blacki is the largest known primate to ever exist, and some researchers have long speculated that a surviving relative could explain sightings across multiple continents. If a descendant of that creature were somehow still wandering the forests of North America, it would fundamentally change how we understand primate evolution and how much of the natural world remains undocumented.
The video doesn't pretend to have all the answers, and that's actually what makes it work. It presents the evidence, the witness testimony, the footprint analysis, and the DNA questions, and lets viewers draw their own conclusions.
