I was on a scouting trip, in my 1967 Jeepster, during a fall scouting trip for deer in the foothills of Mt. St. Helens. It was mid-August, sometime in the mid-1990's. I was traveling on a gravel road (heavily forested on both sides of the road), on level ground idling down the road. The tires would pick up pebbles from the road and toss then to the side. It sounded much like Elk or Deer climbing up or down a rocky incline kicking up pebbles with their hoofs. It was after sunrise and about 100-yards ahead of me, on the left side of the road something caught my eye. I wasn't, at first, sure what it was. At first I thought it was an elk, but then I looked closer. As I intently scrutinized what I was looking at it quickly became obvious it was not an elk, or deer or any other animal.
