A fishing trip in 1988 turned into something no one in Sebastian County, Arkansas could have predicted. A video recently popped up on YouTube that walks through one of the more unsettling encounters to come out of the Natural State, and it's worth every minute of your time.
The story takes place on July 9th, 1988, along the bank of a secluded lake near Huntington. A man was out casting for bass, carefully watching his step because his friends had warned him about the water moccasins in the area. That's when a loud commotion about 15 feet to his right caught his attention. He described the sound as similar to cattle crashing through brush.
What stepped out of those woods was something he would never forget. A large figure, clearly female, standing 7 to 8 feet tall, covered in long reddish-brown or reddish-golden hair that was longest on the head and shoulders. The creature appeared to have no neck. It let out deep, loud whoops in a pattern of three, and when the witness stepped toward it thinking his friends were pranking him, the creature stood straight up, grabbed a small tree, twisted it, and snapped it off like a twig.
The display didn't stop there. The creature began beating the ground with a stick, its eyes wide open, its expression reading as scared or concerned. Then it put its head down, bared its teeth, and let out a low guttural growl. The witness later told a follow-up investigator with the Texas Bigfoot Research Center, "Had it been a lion, I would be dead now."
The details this man remembered years later are striking. He described horse-like teeth, brown facial skin, dark brown skin on the hands, a very long face with a pronounced lower lip reminiscent of Clint Eastwood's orangutan sidekick, a pushed-up gorilla-like nose, and what he called a Jay Leno chin. The eyes were very dark brown and ape-like. The hair, he said, was not thick but pretty, like an Irish setter's coat. He noted there was no smell, though he acknowledged the wind was blowing away from him toward the creature.
What makes this corner of Arkansas particularly interesting is its geography. Sebastian County sits on the western edge of the state with the Ozarks to the north and rougher mountain country pressing in from the south. Just across the Oklahoma line lies LeFlore County, which has 25 reports listed by the BFRO, including multiple Class A sightings near the Gamichi Mountains. So while the exact location of this lake has been lost to time, the broader area sits right at the doorstep of one of the densest clusters of reports in the region.
The witness dropped his fishing rod and slowly backed away down the bank. The creature took a few steps toward him, then paused, appeared to pick something up, and vanished back into the woods. He rushed back to his friends, feeling watched the entire way. They laughed him off. He never returned to that lake.
The video breaks down the encounter with a thoughtful critical analysis, noting that the witness didn't introduce a bunch of conflicting details, which actually strengthens the account. The host points out that the encounter lasted about a full minute, plenty of time to gather solid details at that close range. It's a refreshing take that respects the witness while still asking the right questions.
This one is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a well-documented historical encounter. The host does a great job setting the scene and letting the story breathe. Check it out when you get a chance.
